Guiding organizations toward mission fulfillment, inclusive excellence, and social impact is the cornerstone of Jim’s professional career. Before joining Spelman Johnson in February 2014, Jim built a distinguished career in higher education leadership. He served as vice president for student affairs at The College of New Jersey, where he managed a $60 million budget and a broad portfolio of programs, services, and facilities. At California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona), where he holds emeritus status, he served as associate vice president for student services, executive director of educational equity services, and founding director of the Renaissance Scholars program for former foster youth.
Earlier in his career, he held leadership roles at two private institutions in New York: Pace University and Nyack College. At Nyack, he worked in academic affairs, served as associate dean of the college, directed the Higher Education Opportunity Program, and established the academic development and student success division. At Pace, he was a member of the housing and residential life team within student affairs.
Jim has served as an independent consultant to mission-driven organizations and as an advisor to boards, CEOs, and leaders across the career spectrum. Active in various professional and civic organizations, he speaks on higher education and social justice issues and has received numerous awards for his leadership, advocacy, and community service.
